Kakadu - Yellow Water Billabong

We went on a cruise at sunrise and saw brumbies (wild horses), a sea eagle and lots of crocodiles. They call this little bird a Jesus bird because it looks like it can walk on water (it's really walking on weeds and lilypads). After the cruise we had a big, big breakfast.

Kakadu - Cooinda

Our camp in Kakadu was at Cooinda. They have a great pool and that was good because it was very very hot. I did some backflips with my Dad.

Elsey National Park

While staying at Mataranka we went just up the road to the Elsey National Park and went swimming in this river. The man at our campsite told us that he likes to swim there and that it's easy to see if there are any crocodiles around. The crocodiles here are freshwater crocodiles and they are very shy and don't eat people. There were lots of dragonflies around.

Barramundi

At Mataranka we went to see a man feeding barramundi in a pond. He feeds them pieces of fish on a line and with his fingers and sometimes he can pick them up. I tried some fishing at our campsite but didn't catch anything.

Mataranka

We went to Mataranka and went swimming at a place called Bitter Springs. At Bitter Springs you get in the water and float down a section of a warm river. When you get to the end you climb up a ladder on a bridge and you can go back to the start and do it all again. The water is about 34 degrees Celcius. We went to the Springs lots while we were there. We borrowed noodles from our caravan park because the water is moving quite fast and the noodles help you swim. We would get in half way and paddle around just enjoying the water. There were little fish in the water and I could dive down to the bottom and grab bits of weed. We took my underwater camera along.

Questions and Answers

Hi Prep/1 M

Thank you for your questions.

What is your favourite animal you have seen so far? Why?

It's hard to choose because I've seen so many different animals, and I'mgoing to see crocodiles tomorrow, but I guess I could say the Death Adder that I saw at the reptile centre because he is so tricky. We found a picture in my wildlife book that shows his little worm tail.

What is the biggest city or town you have been to so far?

I've been through Melbourne and Adelaide, they are both big cities, but the biggest place I've stayed is Alice Springs. There are about 25,000 people live there and it's in Central Australia.

Palm Valley

From Alice Springs we drove to Palm Valley. It took some tricky four-wheel driving by my Dad to get us the last bit. The palms in Palm Valley (the Central Australian Red-cabbage Palm) aren't found anywhere else in Central Australia.
